The Gender and Religion Programme is predominantly a postgraduate programme, though there are some links with the undergraduate programme. The Gender and Religion programme offers specialised qualifications at Honours, Masters and PhD levels. More information on the credit requirements can be found in the “Information for Honours/Masters students” brochure. Since 2013, a specialist Masters sub-programme  concerned with Gender, Religion and Health is being offered. The sub-programme is attached to highly competitive scholarships and more information can be sought from the Director of the programme: Prof. Sarojini Nadar (nadars@ukzn.ac.za)

BTh/BA (Honours) in Gender and Religion

The Honours degree is open to students who have a three-year undergraduate degree in theology, religious studies, ethics, or a suitable cognate discipline such as Gender Studies.

This degree is designed for students from Theology, Gender Studies or Ethics backgrounds who would like to extend their knowledge of, and engage critically with, gender theory in relation to religions, particularly but not exclusively to the religious traditions of Africa.

Masters of The​ology (MTh/MA) Degree in Gender and Religion

The Masters degree is open to students who have an Honours degree in Theology or Religious Studies in Gender and Religion, or a similar field with a demonstrated specific focus on Gender (such as Gender Studies; Ethics or Practical Theology)

The MTh/MA is designed for people who want to teach or provide leadership in their constituencies from a gender perspective. A scholarly research dissertation (either full or mini) is required and students are expected to read, research and write at a high level. Students who opt for a Coursework Masters have to complete a core module and two electives in addition to a mini dissertation. The Programme begins in February each year.

 PhD Degree in Gender and Religion

​UKZN offers a PhD degree in Theology/Religious Studies, and this can be undertaken within the Gender and Religion Programme. The PhD degree is open to students who have Masters degree in Theology or Religious Studies in Gender and Religion, or a similar field with a demonstrated specific focus on Gender (such as Gender Studies; Ethics or Practical Theology). The degree is by thesis alone, but students who have not completed the MTh/MA in the Programme are normally required to participate in the Masters core module (Feb – May).
